Latest Updates from Our Project:

Quick Notes from Emily
almost 5 years ago – Wed, Jun 26, 2019 at 01:08:19 AM

I'll keep this brief (I mean, for me...), but just wanted to let people know a few things.

First, if you don't know me, this is Emily Bell, and I founded Atthis Arts based on my passion for artistic, unique fiction and my dedication to the author's authentic voice. I am so thrilled to be working with Greg and the Icarus team. I pulled this quote from Greg's livestream the other night, as it speaks to aspects of why I am really excited about the prospect of adding these books to our catalog:

"I'm very proud of this story. I'd like to think that it's an important story. It's a story that I hope is one of hope and friendship and compassion, community, and kindness." - Author Gregory A. Wilson

More Updates

We have some fun updates coming up. Very soon, we'll hear from author Gregory A. Wilson about what this project means to him and also a special event he is planning. Chris Bell will be writing a note on the business side of things, and he's telling me he's planning to be very open with you. Áthila will be posting an update in Portuguese (we'll provide a translation) including a video of him working on the art. We are really excited about that one. In addition to that, I'll be back with a personal story of our connection back to 2014 when this project was first born. And then Greg will be back with more. Also, more art. More insight. We hope you'll stay tuned for all of that.

Thanks and Hello!

I want you to know that I am here at the Kickstarter "front desk" daily making sure people are being taken care of. In recent campaigns, I've sent personal notes to each backer thanking them. I haven't been doing that this time, so I just want to emphasize that I am seeing and appreciating each one of you, including your pledges, lim-eds, and upgrades. I know a lot of you on the backer list and that level of trust and support is not lost on me. Know that I appreciate you showing your interest in this project, whether Greg's writing brings you in, Áthila's art, you're a Twitch supporter, or you've put your faith in us delivering something solid. Honestly? Every time I consider sending personal notes I decide that a great many of you would rather I stay on schedule with Diamondsong. I'll be finishing the drafting of the serial this summer, and I'm tryying to make that my top priority here for a while. (Ha.) Hey. It's cool. Part 08 is going really well so far - I'm feeling in a much stronger and more energized place than I've been (thanks in part to all of you and your words of encouragement), and I'm pretty confident the serial will finish strong. Anyway, I see you.

Big Couple of Days?

Time will tell, but we are hoping for a big few days. To those who increase their pledge or who share out the links, I see it and I see you. At midnight GMT (this evening Detroit time) we will be the featured comic of the day for 24 hours. So the next day or two will be a really good time for people to share and hype us up. We will see what happens!

Happy Birthday!

Happy 45th Birthday today to Chris Bell.

Bottom Line

Bottom line: Thanks for being here, thanks for believing in this like we do, and we are so serious to go make this happen.

Pool Glass!

For some reason (I have all the theories), indie artists are struggling right now. And I want to share a project with you that I think is fun, from a designer that I have long admired and supported. He just makes the most fun things (they are reliably delivered), and I've ordered many of them to give also as gifts. In this case, he is pitching Pool Glass. Well, it's just a super cool glass. Ok, glass shouldn't be by the pool, but I'm pretty sure this is actually not intended for the pool; he's creating an image here. You can bring the pool to your dining table. And drink the pool water. Ah, stop it - I just think this is fun. Selfishly, I want this to fund because I ordered one for me, and I want to get it. Also, I love seeing unique, creative art and design, and the quality of Duncan's products has never disappointed.

[Hello - We plan to share a set of personal updates from the team, and our notes will be in brackets. Thanks so much for believing in this project. We all do! We've also got exciting news: We'll be featured on the Kickstarter Comics main page on Wednesday. Leveraging that and your help, we hope to generate some hype and momentum over the next few days. If you'd like to let others know now or on Wednesday, please share the link or our posts on Facebook or Twitter. (We'll be sharing that screen capture Tuesday night when it switches over!) We'll keep spreading the word, and with your help, we will bring this story to glory. Now, an update for you from our amazing artist, Áthila Fabbio:]

About my creative process.

Well, about my process, I start by reading the script/book for this project. Then during the reading, I do some sketches of the scene angles and diagrams of the pages. Then I do the storyboard for that page in thumbnails. The next step is the pencils: I do it based on the thumbnails. As I'm in charge of inks also, I don´t do super-defined pencils, just enough for Greg's approval. Next, inks - this is the step where I redefine all the lines and black shadows. Next step, I digitally enhance the page in black and white and print it, and next I do the colors with acrylic inks. And the for the last step, I add some digital details and effects. This is the process of one page and in every step I send the page to Greg for his approval, to make sure I am capturing his story.

About my interest in this project.

When I first met the Icarus graphic novel I liked it because the artwork was done entirely by hand. I like hand-colored comics a lot more than digitally-colored comics, as they remind me of Heavy Metal Magazine, that I've always been a fan of (both heavy metal music and the magazine. lol). When I read the story, I saw that it was a fantasy story and we were presented with a winged guy who seemed to be an angel. That figure captivated me and the story reminded me of an RPG conquest at first, so then I knew that I was facing a great adventure. So when I got the opportunity to join Jellinek's creative team, I was excited to be able to express the art by hand, which I love, and to draw such cool characters like Jellinek and Rig in a great story.

Other great projects.

One thing I like about Kickstarter is the ability to see what other projects artists are working and what projects are available to support. I’ve selected a few of the art styles I really like, to share with you:

[Note that one of these projects has blasted past it's goal, but the rest are not funded. So if you'd like any of these projects, you can help them out too - and enjoy some great art and comics.]

I like Dynamo Azaan - Protector of Hermopolis because the art presented here is a clear line without shadows and with firm strokes which is complemented with color. Great character designs.

[Project Notes: Set in Kenya, a powerful and vibrant hero comic for children.]

It's been a while that I've known this next artist through social media and I’ve always wanted to see a project with him like this. Awesome to see Nightfall!

[Project Notes: A dystopian cyberpunk out of Spain. The future is now.]

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/deathburger/nightfall-0/

---

I love black and white comic pages. Black Plague has awesome artwork, and the story of a vampire that I would like to see.

[Project Notes: An 18th century vampire story, set in London.]

---

I like the art for Curse of El Cucuy Comic #1 - YA Latino Horror Tale because of the awesome colors. I love watercolor painting.

[Project Notes: A horror and coming of age tale with many fascinating modern repercussions, based loosely on the Latin boogeyman myth of El Cucuy; also a Kickstarter Project We Love and today's featured Comic Project of the Day!]

---

I love the cartoon artwork style of Simon Blood, "The Stone Hand" Volume 2. Seems to be an awesome adventure comic!

[Project Notes: This Italian comic is drawn and colored by a father-daughter team, and will be available in both English and Italiano.]

Week 2 Update: New Artwork and What's Up
almost 5 years ago – Fri, Jun 21, 2019 at 02:40:36 PM

What's Up?

Bottom line: we feel great about this project and are committed to see it through. Thank you so much for being here!

We will be direct; the numbers aren't as high as we wanted them to be at this point. But we want to make sure you know we have full confidence in this project and are doing everything we can to spread the word. Several prominent people have endorsed us, and we have several significant efforts in work to get the word out. With help, we believe we can reach the minimum funding - we hope we can go beyond that, and we are working on ways to get there.

We hope you'll join us in our belief and confidence and help get the word out. Specific posts you can share are at the end of this update. Thank you so much for your support!

Fun with Toys!

Before we get to the new artwork, we wanted to share a project that isn't a graphic novel, but we think is completely super fun. Basically, he is manufacturing LEGO-compatible chess pieces. What we love about this, is not only could you (or your mini-figures) literally build or play tiny LEGO chess, but because of their clever design, you could also use them as fun accents on staffs, costumes, gothy manors, or anything that needs to get fancy. He provides fun design examples on the campaign page. Emily has backed from her personal account, and we hope you'll check it out.

Some artwork progressions:

We are going to get into the swing of more regular updates-direct messages and behind-the-scenes insight from the author, and the artist in Brasil (Brazil). These are going to be fun updates, so continue to follow along here for more. In the meantime, we wanted to show you some progressions we put together of Áthila's process: first, the pencil, then the ink, and then the color. We hope you enjoy! (Spoiler warning: looks like Icarus and Jellinek are in a little bit of trouble...)

Ways to help Icarus fly

I couldn't resist. Anyway, as you can see below, this project is getting the attention and support of some well-known names in the writing, gaming, and comics communities. Liking and (more importantly) sharing these posts and updates goes a long way in keeping Icarus & Jellinek moving towards its goals.

Share any (or all) of these posts:

Thanks again for your time and your belief in this project. We are so excited to share the final product with you.
